High Definition Guide
The way we watch movies at home is changing. It's becoming high definition. Those shiny DVD discs you've been buying these past few years are about to be replaced with shiny new discs that hold a lot more (and we mean a lot more) information, allowing movie studios to dramatically improve the quality of both the pictures and soundtracks of your favourite films.
Those of you that are old enough to remember the format war of the early '80s between VHS and Sony's ill-fated BETAMAX (which VHS won, even though BETAMAX was technically superior), will see the similarities with the next generation high definition format war we now have between Blu-ray and HD-DVD.
So, do you buy into the Blu ray format developed by Sony and now supported by a whole host of electronics giants including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, TDK and Thomson or opt for HD DVD developed jointly by Toshiba and NEC and supported by the likes of Microsoft, HP, Sanyo, RCA, Kenwood, Intel, and Memory-Tech Corporation and Intel?
To help make buying your next hardware a bit easier, we've compiled the following guides to the two disc formats and
high definition TV sets.
